#62 May 13, 2014 stumped West Palm Beach, Fl 35,444 miles 26.5 months owned 11/2011 While the electric car cost between 2-3 cents per mile to fuel, the amortization of the vehicle is around 50 cents per mile. I love driving this car but I realize that within a year or so it will be unusable. I can not buy another battery at any price and I do not consider the battery lease plan (which is also not actually available) a reasonable alternative. I believe the Nissan Leaf will cost me 4 - 5 times per mile what the Prius costs. Nissan knew this was the case prior to selling me the car. I feel as if I have been lied to and not supported.

I told her I was surprised that we hadn't lost the second bar, given the first one went on May 26 and other folks who lost their first one after that date had already lost a second one. I then told her that with the higher temps of the last few days I expected we would lose it this week for sure. This morning she turned on the car and it showed 10 capacity bars."

Based on my Leaf Spy Pro readings, I've been expecting to lose a bar for about 5 months now, but it just kept hanging on. Still happy with the car, just wish it had active thermal management of some sort. If I had to do it all over again I'd probably get an EV with battery cooling, but I'd be happy for that EV to be a LEAF if Nissan decides to make such an addition.

#157 Oct 8, 2013 tbleakne Claremont, CA 25392 miles 28 months April 2011 2500 NO N/A 55.41 Ah; 84.47% capacity; "80% Charge" shows 69.4% Gids%

100% charge 2% of charges, 90% 8% of charges, 80% 20% of charges, rest 70% or less 48 QCs, 2 VLBW, no turtle. Range down 14+ miles on 100% charge. Agressive AC of my garage slowed but did not stop capacity loss of about .25% per week. Maintained garage temps high 70s F, but pack temps quickly went to 82+F on short errands. "80%" charge -> 69.8 % Gids just before Firmware update 8-22 -> 75.4% Gids after update. Was hoping to see rebound with cooler Fall temps like last year, but that did not happen. Capacity dropped as follows: 8-30 73.3%Gids (2 % drop in just 1 week after update) 9-7 71.5% 9-13 71.2% 9-14 switched to ELM327 86.19% capacity 9-21 85.31% 9-30 84.77% 10-6 84.19% 10-7 84.69% (note rise - cool temperatures) 10-8 84.55% morning before bar dropped 10-8 84.46% afternoon after bar dropped

Pack temp +90 F after QC on Oct 5, took 12 hours for pack temperature down to 73 F. Pack temp this past week down to 65 F by morning.

#125 June 3, 2013 ttweed La Jolla, CA 31953 miles 26 months 01317 "Our 2011 Sl-e lost the first capacity bar this morning at 31,953 miles and 26 months in service. We live in a very cool micro-climate next to the ocean, which is a large heatsink moderating the temps. For the first year and a half we charged to 80% most of the time, and to 100% only occasionally, and never fast-charged. Over the last 6 months, as range dropped, we began charging to 100% more often, but still less than half the time (maybe 3 days a week), and used mid-day opportunity charging more (but still no DCFC/L3 charging at all). The car is always garaged at night, and ambient temp has been in the 60F range lately, so I was surprised to see it lose a bar now instead of during the heat of the summer, but so it goes...."

Suspect this is normal for the environment we live in. Hope the new battery warranty we have heard about is real, Nissan rep said to expect a letter soon when I called in to report the loss. This morning I woke up to my first capacity bar *poof* gone on my 2011 SL, VIN#909. Mileage just turned over 25000. The climate has been moderately cool here in SoCal. I was toying with the idea of trading in the lease for a 2013, but now with 11 bars the plummeting value death knell has begun and those rose-colored glasses are off. I only charge every other day or so. I start to charge at 6 in the morning and usually leave around 9 so my Leaf doesn’t even spend much time at 80% charge. My Leaf has spent 90-95% of its time between 3 and 8 SOC bars. My long term average is 5.7 m/kwh and I drive on the frontage roads, not the highway, so I never exceed 45 mph. Exclusively in Eco. I did not pay attention when I lost one bar because I thought it was the display error. The lost mileage was due to the AC. I lost my second bar in 1 month (Aug, 2012). That is the time I am aware of the problem."
#35 Jun 28, 2012 David Leal Houston, TX 18300 miles 14 months 00870 "... took car in twice complaining I only get 55 mile per charge when I used to get mid 70s. Was told that was normal and acceptable. Dealer told Nissan they could not duplicate the rapid loss , don't know how they tried to duplicate it since they did not drive or drain one mile off. I told them to drive it , they say they don't do that. So took it home unresolved then next day took it for drive taking a pic after every bar was lost then got the --- at 55 miles. Now I have pics to prove but see no point to it. I told them I lose 6 bars after 24-25 miles yet range estimate says 48 remaining, like I will believe that. I still love the car but this range loss is making me wish I leased instead of buy."

#1 Oct ?, 2011 Gonewild Chandler, AZ 12000 miles 7 months 00229 Originally reported as a PM to vrwl. "Hi just wanted you to know you can add me to your list and I have lost 1 bar on my second battery pack. Yes this is my second pack I was the first in Oct 2011 to get a pack replaced after 7 month and 12,000 miles. Now at 23,000 miles 14 months I have lost 1 bar again. I called Mark Perry who I have stayed in touch with from the beginning and replace my first pack off the record since I never called the No Gas number. I told Mark Perry the problem is back on Friday and he said he is adding me to the list of cars. I will cancel my lease if the problem is not a good fix. Meaning a patch is not good I would like to see them add an active cooling system for free to AZ car with problems."

#7 March 1 2013 lazerwolfe Harrisburg, PA 10,120 miles 9 months 5/13 95% capacity left; charge to 80% most nights, charge to 100% as needed. Stored in a garage.
#6 Nov 20, 2013 gsleaf Portland, OR 12,567 miles 15 months 89% SOH; charge to 80% every night. Top off about 100% as needed. Stored in a garage, although I have fans to keep it cooler during the summer.
#5 Jan 8, 2013 emmphx Phoenix, AZ 9100 miles 17 months 6549 Drive 45-50 miles per day, charge to 80% every weeknight, never charged DCQC, charge to 100% on the weekends. No loss of capacity bars but there is a steep dropoff when I charge to 100%. ie a 15-20 mile drive will start at a range of 107 and be down to 65 within 15 minutes. There is a 1000 feet altitude change when this occurs. Car is parked under covered parking during the day; temp is often 110 degrees and up in the summer even in the shade. Car is garaged at night. We have noticed that if we need to charge earlier (ie when the temp is still 90ish degrees as opposed to say at 3 am when it might be 80...) we don't get as much range.
#4 Sep 7, 2013 DVinton Portland, OR 37,500 miles 27 months 3/11 1533 Still drive 45-50 miles/day, charge to 80% every night (now 9 bars), DCQC 2-3 times a month. Still have all capacity bars but anecdotal loss of range approaching 10 miles. Prior report from a year ago: Drive 45-50 miles per day, charge to 80% every night, DCQC half a dozen times, and opportunity charge to 100% on the weekends. No loss of capacity bars but an anecdotal loss of range (4-5 miles?) from doing the same daily drive now for 16 months.
