Since the Polestar 2 is still a vehicle you can’t buy yet, details on the specifics are often confused and even misquoted.
Originally, when the Polestar 2 was unveiled on February 27, 2019, and then shortly after at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, battery range and motor power were often quoted at 396 hp, allowing an all electric range of around 310 miles. AutoExpress UK reported this information.
As we get closer to launch, however, Polestar itself is releasing specifications on the 2 electric vehicle. Adding to the confusion, of course, it the different electric vehicle range rating systems we have around the world, and the slightly smaller battery pack size that will only be available in China (for some reason).
Here is what the official Polestar 2 website now says:
Electric Motors
The Polestar 2 has an electric front axle drive and an electric rear axle drive – which is Polestar’s lingo for 2 electric motors, one powering the front wheels and the other powering the rear wheels.
Combined power output of these dual electric motors is 300 kW of power, and 660 Nm of torque – that’s 408 hp and 486 ft-lb of torque for people used to those numbers.
Polestar 2 Electric Range
The Polestar 2 range is still quoted as ‘targeted’ which we can assume means that no official ratings have been tested for and given yet.
On the WLTP/NEDC cycle, the targeted range is 500 kms of electric driving. On the EPA’s rating scale, that’s an estimated 275 miles of range.
Polestar 2 Battery Size
The battery pack being offered in China is 72 kWh, which could be because of a different battery supplier, or perhaps even tax incentives that limit the allowable size of pack.
In the rest of the world, the Polestar 2 has a 27-module, 78 kWh lithium ion battery pack.
