2015
Since first going on sale in the USA in October 2015, the BMW x5 eDrive has been selling between 100 and 200 units each month – until December!
For some reason, 607 X5 plug-in hybrids were sold in the month of December, perhaps mostly as Christmas presents?!
I wonder if BMW will be able to continue the rise of sales through the start of 2016, or if it was merely an end-of-year rush to get the tax credit…
2014
The BMW x5 eDrive was first unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt International Auto Motor Show. As the first vehicle from BMW to combine xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with a plug-in hybrid system, the X5 eDrive can function in all-electric mode generating zero emissions.
At the 2014 New York Auto Show in April 2014, the BMW Concept x5 eDrive debuted there but still had ‘concept’ in its stage name.
At the 2014 LA Auto Show (November 2014), the x5 eDrive no longer had concept in its name, and BMW said it would enter production in April 2015.
Availability in the USA
The BMW x5 eDrive is the first non i-sub-brand plug-in hybrid from BMW, and will likely arrive this fall in the USA as a 2016 model year.
Netherlands Availability
Some websites are predicting that the eDrive BMW x5 pricing will be announced by mid-March, and it will be on the market in July.
First debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2014, the x5 xDrive40e is the first hybrid x5 offering and is just months away from its market debut. The plug-in hybrid x5 continues its auto show circuit, and landed in Paris in October 2014.
With a total output power of electric and gasoline motor combined, and a 0-60 mph time of ‘less than 7.0 seconds’, the xDrive40e can also drive up to 120 km/h in all electric mode.
The only real difference in appearance between this and the standard x5 is the chargeport opening in the front left fender.
