First published in August 2017, here are the full specifications to share with members of the 2018 Honda Clarity Electric forum.

The Honda Clarity Electric comes with a 25.5 kWh battery pack – and while that seems small compared to others like the Chevy Bolt, it is directly in line with other electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 etc.

The Honda Clarity Electric received an EPA rated 126 MPGe rating, which puts it near the top of the list of electric vehicles based on overall efficiency of the drivetrain and the aerodynamics of the design.

As for range, the Clarity Electric gets 89 miles per charge.

Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid Specifications

The Honda Clarity PHEV uses a 1.5 liter, 16 valve, Atkinson cycle 4 cylinder gasoline engine. Combined with the 181 horsepower electric motor and 232 lb-ft of torque, combined system horsepower in the Honda Clarity plug-in is 212 horsepower.

All of the electric energy needed is stored in a 17 kWH lithium ion battery pack. On a Level 2 EVSE (240 Volt), approximate charging time is only 2.5 hours. If you’re plugged into a standard 120V outlet with the onboard, portable charging cable, charge time is 12 hours.

The Clarity plug-in has a battery heater to keep the battery warm in cold temperatures to minimize range loss during the winter.

Stock wheels and tires provided are 18″ hybrid aerodynamic aluminum alloy wheels, wrapped in 235/45 R18 m+s all season tires.

As for electronic goodies, the Plug-in Hybrid Clarity comes with a bunch of active safety systems including electronic brake force distribution, collision mitigation braking system, forward collision warning system, hill start assist, lane departure warning, and road departure mitigation. Then there’s the driver assist technology like adaptive cruise control with low speed follow, Honda LaneWatch blindspot display, and lane keeping assist system. Other, more ‘standard’ systems include traction control, tire pressure monitoring, and anti-lock brakes.

For a plug-in hybrid, total vehicle curb weight is only 1843 kg. And for cargo, even with all that battery tucked into the vehicle somewhere, is still an impressive 439 liters.

Honda Clarity Pricing Canada

In Canada, the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid starts at $39,900 MSRP. In some provinces, there is up to $13,000 in incentives which can bring the MSRP cost down to $26,900 CDN. Provinces with incentives include British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.

The Clarity Electric isn’t yet available in Canada, and may never be. In a December 2017 interview with The Globe and Mail Canada, Honda Canada’s assistant VP of product planning and business development said “We don’t think the pure electric vehicle is right for Canadians – in an emergency, you need to be able to fill up in five minutes.”

Honda Clarity Price and Availability USA

The Honda Clarity Electric is available for lease only as a closed-end lease. Total due at signing is $899 plus tax and registration. Monthly payments are $199 for 36 months. The Honda Clarity Electric is currently available in Northern and Southern California, and Oregon. Check out Honda.com’s website for a list of dealers

The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is $33,400 MSRP for the base model. Because of the 17 kWh battery pack, the Honda Clarity PHEV qualifies for the full $7500 federal tax credit, bringing the cost down to $25,900 plus the $890 destination charge and extras.

Unlike the Clarity EV and Clarity fuel-cell, the Clarity plug-in hybrid is available nationwide as of December 1st, 2017.

Honda Clarity Replacement Wheel

I have quite a bit of curb damage to the wheels. Original tires are getting on in age at 46750 mi. Started looking at wheel options vs getting the wheels repaired at Wheels America. Then I decided to check the Honda estore for how much original replacement wheels cost. Turns out the MSRP on an OE wheel is an eye popping $951.14! I guess repair or aftermarket wheels are the way to go…..

Turns out Honda went out of it’s way to engineer a passive noise cancelling device integrated into each wheel!

Feeling pretty rotten that I’ve curbed our wheels quite severely, the optional Honda wheels have a cheaper MSRP, and appear to have no covers that make noise rolling around the parking lot (at least running 30.5 PSI), these are a cheaper option that I guess would have the same feature:

Maintenance Mode, for Warming Engine Prior to Oil Change.

To try to make up for my confusion about the oil change interval I’m going to post how to put your engine into maintenance mode:

Turn on the car, (or if already on), then turn it off, within 60 seconds perform the following:

Turn Ig-ON but not the engine, do this by pressing the Start button twice without depressing the brake pedal.

Depress the gas pedal two times all the way to the floor.

Press brake pedal and shift to N.

Depress the gas pedal two times all the way to the floor.

Press brake pedal and shift to P.

Depress the gas pedal two times all the way to the floor.

Press brake pedal and push Start button.

This should start the engine in maintenance mode.

Instructions for oil change say to rev engine at 3k RPM until fan comes on, then shut it off as normally do by pressing the Start button.

Failed to charge while plugged in

From the Clarity Forum:

Twice now, once on a level 1 charger and once on a level 2 charger, I have plugged the car in to charge, seen the green light come on and flash but have come back and found that the charging never happened. Was wondering if anyone else has observed this. I have a charging timer set for 9 pm to use lower cost electrons, but both times it was overnight and charging should have started. Any hints or comments would be appreciated. Love the car otherwise.

First thing I would check is the AM/PM setting on your timer.

I’ve been known to mess that up when setting an alarm….

The slowly blinking light (both at the charge port and on the factory L1 is you are using that) does indicate that a delay timer has been set, and charging should begin at the set time. A rapidly blinking light indicates a charging error. This could be as simple as a poorly seated charge connector. Disengaging and reconnecting may solve this issue. The blinking indicator near the charge port will go out after 15 seconds in either scenario.

You might also double check to see that you have the timer mode set to “Full”, and don’t have it set to “Time” with a start time of 9PM and and end time of 9PM (or something else of very short duration).

You did not specify if you have the Clarity Electric or Plug-in, but both use the same timer setup.

Where did you find out about the slow versus fast blinking light on the charge port. I thought that I had read the manual in detail but do not remember seeing that. I guess Honda could not afford a dual color LED, say green and red. I do think a poor plug connection may have been the problem.
I also would like to find a clearer description of all the operating modes and what happens in each case when the battery charge reaches zero.

The blinking lights are described in the user manual(s). It is the same on the Fit EV (our current EV) as well as the Clarity Electric & PHEV.

I’m assuming you have the Plug-In from your last question. After the battery is exhausted, it will function like any other hybrid using the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) for power and the batteries will get some charge when slowing (regen or braking). No user action is required, the gas engine will fire as needed.

If you have the Clarity Electric, it will warn you when the charge gets low, then go into a reduced power mode, then eventually stop completely while you wait for the tow of shame.

I’ve driven the Clarity, but don’t own one so a detailed explanation of the various modes would be better addressed by someone with more experience.

PHEV Fuel door getting stuck and not opening

I reported this problem before, to have occurred in the cold (moderate winter weather) of Southern California. Unfortunately the problem has become more pronounced occurring during warmer weather, (unusually cool summer here in Southern California). I would say it occurred about three times in daytime weather, which is a concern to me, if my wife happens to be trying to refill it at a station one day in the future and it gets stuck on her. Pressing the fuel door release/open button a few to several times has eventually gotten it to open. An occasional pressing of the fuel door itself in between button presses may have helped. This is one of those intermittent issues I’m afraid I don’t expect quick resolution. (Hopefully they are able to confirm the issue next time I bring it in, or at least lubricate the lock mechanism somehow)….

We are finalizing the documents of a replacement vehicle that got into an accident very soon and I will try to bring it in when she can drive the other car to work.

Still getting stuck. Today it was 50%. First time it didn’t open. Took a picture of the Ready indicator, and then the still closed cover. Second press and it popped open. Haven’t taken it to the dealer yet, as I felt might not be a good use of time….

What I noticed is that I need to hold the button down longer to get it to open.

I have noticed that sometimes it takes 2 or 3 presses of the button to get it to open. As you mentioned, it is intermittent so it doesn’t warrant involving the dealer. I’m kind of surprised Honda doesn’t have a consistent fuel door button figured out by now.

Okay, so the intermittent issue is getting worse. It is almost every time I have to fill that the first press fails. I did try the emergency fuel release. First time I pulled it, it also failed to open! I only had to fill once since I “found” the emergency release, but it feels like similar to the remote button release. Car is dirty, could dirt be the cause? Anyways, I will try the emergency release again next time it fails. Once I got the fuel door open, then I went to the fuel door and closed it. (Not busy at the gas station) If I tried the release again, it worked the first time. Makes sense that the dealer could not replicate because I tried it just before giving it to them. It takes the long time of inactivity before refueling to get stuck again. Hmm…

After the wait notification and progress bar is complete, there is a “Ready” notice. Unfortunately I confirmed it said “Ready” when the door was still stuck closed. It wasn’t consistently stuck so I just lived with it. (I did bring it to service attention when it was there for recalls and free first oil change, but the service adviser just said that they could not replicate the problem).

The driver side wiper would hit the A-pillar somewhat randomly. I was grateful that they were able to resolve that one….

Range Indicator Malfunction in the Driver Information Interface

I bought my 2018 Clarity plug-in hybrid in December 2017, and everything was smooth until a couple of days ago. Immediately when I filled it up with gas, the Range selection in the Driver information interface, (DII), set itself to 999, which is impossible.

The EV indicator display part is correct, but the HV display part read 999, and the Total range miles reflected that error. The A and B trip odometers, fuel indicator gauge are also fine.

Curious if anyone else has experienced a similar issue.

I will call Honda tomorrow and see if there is some kind of reset for the DII that I can do to set things right, without resetting all my other settings

There is an efficiency graphic with horizontal bar graph that displays right when you turn the ignition off. The more full leaves and bar graph the better you did. Most of the time they are full for me though….
