Cadillac ELR

Specs and Info

The 2014 Cadillac ELR that was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013 is a stunning piece of technology. With 20 inch wheels pushed out to the corners of the vehicle, the ELR is a wedge shaped coupe with strong plunging window lines. The interior is full of chrome, wood and microfiber, blending the traditional luxury of Cadillac with the very latest. Buyers can opt for carbon fiber instead of wood, and Opes semi-aniline leather instead of microfiber.

The ELR largely shares the Chevy Volt drivetrain, but Cadillac has said that platform upgrades will roll out to the ELR first – further entrenching the ELR as a luxury plug-in hybrid with added benefits over the Volt.

The Cadillac ELR electric motor produces 295 ft-lbs of torque, which is 22 more than the Volt’s motor.

Cadillac still hasn’t released any range or price estimates, but online the rumors seem to put the electric range around the same as the Volt’s 38 miles with 300 miles of total range, and a price somewhere between $52,000 and $65,000.

Cadillac has repeatedly said the ELR will be a limited production vehicle, but has released no information as to what exactly that means.

Update: As of December 2014, Cadillac has started deliveries of the ELR to certain US markets.

Update: Cadillac has announced the ELR, the first electrified luxury coupe from a major luxury brand, will be available in January. GM says the Cadillac ELR will be limited production model and GM feels people will pay the premium price because it is a collector vehicle.

Update: The first 2014 Cadillac ELR rolled off the Detroit-Hammtramck assembly line on March 29th. Still no word on pricing or delivery times.

General Motors North America President Mark Ruess announced in mid-October 2012 that preperations would be under way at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to build the Cadillac ELR. Mark also stated that the Cadillac ELR is now scheduled to begin in late 2013.

At the Detroit Auto Show on January 14th, Cadillac confirmed production will begin late 2013 and sales will start in early 2014 in North America and expand to global markets including Europe and China.

The total investment into the plant is $561 million since december 2009, and the Cadillac ELR represents the first 2 door car built at the facility since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.

First introduced as the Cadillac Converj back in 2009, the Cadillac ELR is the production version and will hold true to the concept’s design.

Cadillac has not made any announcements as to how many ELRs will be available when it goes on sale, or as to whether they will be available anywhere in North America, or in specific markets only like many other vehicle manufacturers seem to be doing with their hybrid and hybrid electric vehicles.
